Being a union steward is not an easy job. Unions couldn’t survive without their stewards. Stewards are the eyes and ears in the workplace and this course provides you with the tools you will need to listen, communicate, educate, and defend your fellow co-workers; in dealing with management, during elections, meetings, and collective bargaining. At the end of this course, you will have learned about different infractions that lead to a grievance, resolving grievances, and policing the agreement.

Being Inclusive: LGBTQ +
Standing up for human rights and the rights of workers is fundamental to what we do and who we are as trade unions – an injury to one is an injury to all. We need our lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans members to know that the union belongs to them as much as it belongs to other members.

Better Notetaking +
Did you know that some research studies have shown you can forget up to 90% of what you've learned in less than a week? Other studies show we retain half of what we've learned for 30 days. What's most important though; over time, we all slowly forget what we've learned. One effective strategy for improving retention is note taking – not just because you'll have a written record to refer to in the future, but also because the actual act of taking notes can help reinforce concepts in your mind.

We are reminded, on a daily basis, about the rise in global warming, ice melting, and sea-levels increasing. The conditions of our Mother Earth and its ecosystems are deteriorating day by day. However, many still remain sceptical and we continue to ignore the warnings. In order to achieve sustainable development and environmental conservation policies, objectives and targets, society needs to become more sensitive to the multiple dimensions of environment. This course will explore Canada’s impact on the environment and its roles and responsibilities moving forward.

We explore the different types of communicators, how feelings play a role in our perceptions, and interpretations. By the end of the course, participants will have learned to communicate more effectively while maintaining empathy and self control.

This course will review how government was created, what Confederation has brought us, what our Constitution has brought us, and how we link these factors to contribute to a responsible government.

Unions have done a lot of work to help worker rights and social issues, yet they still have more to do. Labour History – Part 1 +
From the beginning to the present, the emergence of Canada’s labour movement resulted from the determination of thousands of working women and men dedicated to bettering the position of their peers. The advances made economically and socially by workers weren’t attained without some form of confrontation. Any attempt to portray labour’s story without giving recognition to this fact is to ignore recorded history. This course takes you back to 1816 with the initial formation of workers, and the stirrings of activism; all the way to the end of World War II…this is the story of the labour movement.

Labour History – Part 2 +
The factors that have led workers to take a more militant stand have set the tone for many of the achievements and contributions the trade union movement has made towards the development of Canada. This course builds on what is learned in Labour History-Part 1, and continues on forward until the mid 1970’s. Read about the various ‘show-downs’ throughout the decades between corporations and the working people of Canada for many of the things some people take for granted.

Preparing for Arbitration +
“Anything you say can and will be held against you” is a true statement, when it comes to arbitration. It is a mechanism used to settle disputes between the grievor/union and employer when the grievance procedure has been exhausted and the parties cannot come to some mutual agreement on a resolution to the problem. This course will de-mystify the process by reviewing what issues can arise out of interpretation, application, and violations of a collective agreement. Everything you will need if going to Labour Court.

Restoring Human Dignity: The Aboriginal Legacy +
There are many stories that Canadians do not regularly learn in school. Our history is littered with events that are either deliberately overlooked, or forgotten due to our own internal biases. And this is particularly true when it comes to the history of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples. For over a century, Aboriginal children in Canada were taken from their homes and communities and placed in residential schools. Separated from their families and prohibited from speaking their native languages, the vast majority of residential school survivors experienced neglect and suffering. And the impacts of sexual, mental, and physical abuse, shame, and deprivation endured at residential schools continue to affect generations of survivors and their families today.

Labour court is a serious matter and costly too. Arbitration is a mechanism for resolving disputes and is an extension of the grievance procedure. This course de-mystifies arbitration by explaining why decisions are made. Budgeting lies at the foundation of every financial plan. To have a handle on your finances, you need to know where your money is going. Contrary to popular belief, budgeting isn't about restricting what you spend money on. It's really about understanding how much money you have, where it goes, and then planning how to best distribute those funds. This also holds true when we talk about budgets for households, businesses, and even our government.
Understanding Budgets examines the process and creation of a government budget, and how we can apply these concepts to understand one of the largest budgets around – Canada’s federal budget.

Agreements protect the language we want and improve on what the law provides. This course is a must to understanding the importance of your collective agreement in the workplace.
