By the Numbers: Youth unemployment and underemployment in Canada, around the world

Toronto – August 17, 2013 – The global youth unemployment rate, estimated at 12.6% or 73 million in 2013, has reached an alarming level. Secure, full-time, good jobs – once a norm for previous generations – are much less accessible to today’s youth.

Toronto – August 10, 2013 – UFCW Canada is giving migrant workers and their families hope for a better future through the 2013 Migrant Workers Scholarship program, which offers twenty $500 union scholarships to the family members of migrant workers.

Celebrate International Youth Day – August 12

Toronto – August 8, 2013 – Each year the United Nations' (UN) International Youth Day is observed on August 12th. This event was established in 2000 as a means of raising awareness of the issues affecting young people around the world. Now in its 13th year, IYD is part of the UN's broader World Programme of Action for Youth, an initiative that aims to promote the wellbeing and livelihood of young people through international action.

2012 BDM Union Scholarship Winner: Lizzie Hayward, Local 401

Calgary – April 11, 2013 – Lizzie Hayward is one of 18 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu (BDM) Scholarships winners for 2012. Lizzie is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 401 Member Bill Hayward, a retail meat-cutter for Safeway Canada, who is a leading activist for the union in the stores and the Calgary community.
