UFCW Canada helped Break the Silence for the Cuban Five by acting as the primary sponsor for a Peoples’ Tribunal & Assembly in Toronto from September 21 to 23.
Raul Gatica, a long-time a human rights activist, staff member and past coordinator of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) centre in Surrey, British Columbia, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his outstanding commitment and contribution to the rights of migrant agricultural workers in Canada.
Under a Joint Diversity Initiative, UFCW Canada Local 1518 and Overwaitea recently participated in Vancouver’s Pinoy Fiesta, which invites everyone to spend the day celebrating the vibrant Filipino culture. Thousands of families attended the colourful event in the city’s Memorial South Park.
We were all shaken by the horrendous news of a gunman with white supremacist ties ripping apart the Sikh community with the senseless murder of six innocent lives on August 5, 2012 in Milwaukee. Three others were critically injured. To make matters worse, the brutal attack took place in a most sacred place: a Gurdwara – a Sikh temple, a place where all are welcome to eat and pray regardless of gender, race, religion or creed.
As a pioneer in work related to diversity and inclusion in the union movement, UFCW Canada Local 1518 demonstrated its support at the 17th Annual DIVERSEcity awards in Surrey, British Columbia. A number of staff and members, including Local 1518 President Ivan Limpright and UFCW Canada National Office General Counsel Naveen Mehta, attended the popular event in an effort to support those who support diverse communities.
