On a beautiful and sunny Sunday afternoon, approximately 100 migrant agriculture workers joined the Spanish community in downtown Bradford, Ontario to celebrate El Sembrador’s annual barbeque. Two of the workers won brand new bicycles donated by Students Against Migrant Exploitation (SAME). The festivities included an array of Spanish food specialties from Latin America and music to please the crowd.
In 2010, UFCW Canada created the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships to provide financial assistance to migrant workers’ children in sending countries, as a means to pursue their studies, and to fulfill the dreams that began when their fathers or mothers made the decision to migrate to Canada in order to improve their families’ lives.
A group of hospitality workers in the Alberta oil sands region are celebrating after winning a long-fought battle to become the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 401. Applying for certification to join the union over a year ago, the newest Local 401 members, who work for North Country Catering (NCC), kept strong while the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) took many months to dismiss a company challenge.

The British Columbia Labour Board recently issued a remedial certification for workers at Cawston Cold Storage in Cawston, B.C. In its decision, the B.C. Labour Board ruled that UFCW Canada Local 1518 had strong worker support for the campaign, and that the employer interfered with the organizing drive in such a way that it met the test to issue a remedial certification.
