A better direction for Canada in 2014

Toronto – January 6, 2014 – The beginning of a new year is typically a time of optimism when many folks make resolutions to take action to make the future better. A resolve to join as engaged citizens can make that happen, by standing together to campaign and defeat Ultra-Conservative politicians and their corporate-only agenda.

A season of goodness and community

December 19, 2013 – Around this time of year, it's hard not to notice the goodness of people – the high school student holding the door so you can get the stroller through; the person who comes rushing to your rescue in the parking lot with a set of jumper cables; children meeting for the first time while building a snowman at the park; strangers sincerely wishing other strangers good wishes for the season.  Altogether, it is a season of sharing goodwill as a caring and diverse community.

On December 24th, We Remember

Toronto – December 19, 2013 – December 24th marks the fourth anniversary of the Christmas Eve scaffold tragedy, in which four migrant workers were killed and another seriously injured after the scaffold that was supporting them collapsed at a Toronto worksite.

Toronto – December 19, 2013 – Former UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley signed a historic Mutual Support Agreement between Canada's best union and First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCS) at a recent UFCW Canada National Council meeting in Toronto.

By the Numbers - Food Banks in Canada

Toronto – December 18, 2013 – About 1.7 million individuals in Canada were helped by food banks in 2013. For about 900,000 of these visitors, 2013 was the first year they needed a food bank in their struggle to put food on the table. In total, there were more than 14 million visits to food banks in Canada in 2013, and the need in 2014 is not expected to drop. The number of people turning to food banks is actually higher than when the recession began five years ago, and across Canada, more than four million people (including more than a million children) go hungry because they can't afford to meet their needs when it comes to food.

Jonquière Walmart workers return to the Supreme Court

Ottawa – December 17, 2013 – Former employees and UFCW Canada members from the shuttered Walmart store in Jonquière, Quebec, and their spokesperson Gaétan Plourde returned to the Supreme Court of Canada on December 6, in a new effort to win their case.

International Migrants Day – December 18

Toronto – December 16, 2013 – International Migrants Day – December 18, annually commemorates the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of Rights of All Migrant Workers and their Families by the United Nations on December 18, 1990. In this upcoming holiday season, migrant workers can only hope that their ability to access to Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits is restored in Canada.

By the Numbers: International migration

Toronto – December 14, 2013 – On December 18, on International Migrants Day, the world recognizes and celebrates the rights of migrants. The day annually commemorates the December 8, 1990 adoption of the United Nations International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, which affirms the human rights of all migrants, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, and recognizes that migrants are men, women, children, and families – not just economic commodities.
