UFCW activists hold the line with striking Wing's workers
Toronto - August 21, 2013 - UFCW Canada activists from across the Toronto area joined workers on the picket line at Wing's Food Products on Wednesday, to support UFCW Canada Local 175 members who have been on strike since August 13. More than 140 members work at the Toronto food processor. Earlier this month, the bargaining unit voted overwhelmingly to take strike action, after it became clear to the Union’s negotiating committee that after five days of negotiations and two in mediation, no reasonable progress was being made with the employer.
The members are fighting for job security, better wages, vacation, and hours of work, and to put a stop to the employer’s constant attempts to prevent the Union from representing the workers.
“Wing’s has proposed unprecedented changes to the grievance procedure, which would restrict the evidence that could be used during grievance meetings,” explained Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “These restrictions would create an unfair advantage for the employer in a system that is intended to protect the workers.”
On Thursday, a board-ordered vote on the company's final offer will be held. The negotiating committee has recommended it be rejected. Unfair labour practice charges against the company are also pending.
