Labour Day 2026: Strength and solidarity across Canada

Labour Day 2026

Toronto – September 1, 2026 – This Labour Day, UFCW members will be gathering in their communities from coast-to-coast, to celebrate the contributions that working people make every day and to call on our governments to protect the rights that help workers negotiate fair wages, safe workplaces, and a better future for their families, especially in these uncertain times ahead.

As the trade war with the United States intensifies, causing broader economic uncertainty, Canadian workers are on the frontlines defending good jobs and supporting economic stability by standing together in their workplaces and communities. UFCW members are showing up for each other in acts of solidarity, campaigning for stronger worker protections and supporting the Canadian- and union-made goods that sustain good jobs at home.

"Labour Day is a reminder that our solidarity is our strength, and that, by standing together, we can overcome the challenge ahead," says UFCW Canada National President Barry Sawyer. "In this face of increasing economic uncertainty, this day highlights the importance of solidarity to ensure that no worker is left behind. By standing united, we can continue to build workplaces that are safe and fair for all workers.”

This Labour Day, the Canadian Labour Congress is calling on all workers to stand together to defend the right to bargain collectively: the federal government is reviewing the Canada Labour Code, raising concerns that workers’ bargaining power could be weakened at a time when many Canadians are already struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty.

The right to bargain collectively and, when necessary, to strike helps workers improve wages, benefits, and workplace safety. Those gains strengthen families, support local economies, and raise standards for workers across Canada.
