This summer, stand up for Affordability for All

Toronto – August 5, 2026 - Summer is a time to enjoy long days, community celebrations, and time with family and friends. But for too many Canadians, Summer 2026 is overshadowed by the rising cost of living.

As the price of essentials, rent, and everyday expenses continue to climb, more workers and their families are being forced to make impossible choices just to get by.

The affordability crisis is affecting people in every corner of the country. Families are cutting back on essentials, seniors are worried about stretching fixed incomes, students are carrying growing debt, and workers are seeing their wages struggle to keep pace with rising costs. For many, the dream of owning a home, building savings, or taking a well-earned vacation feels increasingly out of reach.

The impact goes beyond household budgets. The affordability crisis is deepening inequality, making it harder to access affordable housing, quality childcare, healthcare, and secure, family-supporting jobs. Women, Indigenous peoples, racialized workers, newcomers, and other equity-seeking communities continue to face the greatest challenges.

That's why UFCW Canada is calling on governments to take meaningful action through the Affordability for All campaign. We need real investment in affordable housing, stronger universal healthcare, affordable childcare, good union jobs with fair wages, and trade policies that put workers ahead of corporate profits. We also believe the wealthiest individuals and corporations should pay their fair share to support the public services Canadians depend on.

Change happens when workers stand together. This summer, help make affordability a national priority by joining the Affordability for All campaign. Send a message to your Member of Parliament, ask what they are doing to address the affordability crisis, and encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to take action.
