Saskatoon YIP session empowers the next generation of Prairie union leaders
Saskatoon, Sask. – July 20, 2026 – Young UFCW Canada activists from across the Prairies recently gathered in Saskatoon for the latest session of the UFCW Canada Young Workers Internship Program (YIP), bringing together participants from UFCW Local 1400 and UFCW Local 832 for a week of learning, leadership development, and solidarity.
Throughout the session, participants explored the history of the labour movement while building practical skills through interactive workshops, group discussions, and team-building activities. From workplace rights and organizing to equity and activism, YIP provided members with the knowledge and confidence to become stronger advocates in their workplaces and communities.
A highlight of the week was the collective bargaining simulation, where participants worked together to negotiate workplace improvements while gaining a deeper understanding of the bargaining process. The hands-on exercise demonstrated the importance of preparation, communication, and solidarity in achieving meaningful gains for workers.
The group also welcomed UFCW Local 1400 President Lucy Figueiredo, a former participant in the Young Workers Internship Program, who shared her experiences and reflected on how YIP helped shape her journey as a union leader. Her visit offered participants valuable insight into the lasting impact of the program and highlighted the important role young activists play in building the future of the labour movement.
"At first, I was hesitant to attend YIP because I didn't think there was much more I could learn about unions," says Bryce Bellefeuille (he/him), a UFCW Local 1400 member. "Most of what I knew came from sports unions, and I didn't really understand how unions work in everyday workplaces or the impact they have on workers and our communities. By the end of the week, I had a completely different perspective. I'd encourage anyone who has the opportunity to attend YIP to take it. You learn so much about where the labour movement has been, where it's headed, and the role you can play in its future. I left with new knowledge, new confidence, and friendships that will last well beyond the program."
