July 2026 – Raspberry Moon (UFCW Indigenous Calendar)

Toronto – June 30, 2026 – As summer reaches its height, July's Raspberry Moon (Mskomini Giizis) reminds us that growth comes through change. Named for the season when raspberries ripen, the Raspberry Moon teaches kindness, gentleness, and the wisdom to navigate life's challenges with compassion and resilience. These teachings encourage us to move through times of transition with patience, caring for ourselves, our communities, and the land that sustains us.

The Raspberry Moon is a time to embrace the lessons that change can bring. As the natural world continues to flourish, this moon invites us to reflect on our relationships with one another and with Creation. By approaching life's challenges with kindness and understanding, we strengthen our communities and continue the journey toward reconciliation, respect, and shared learning.

The artwork for July was created from a photograph of Papineau Creek in Hastings Highlands, located on Anishinaabe and Algonquin territory. The original photograph was captured by UFCW Canada Indigenous Committee member Gloria Elstone, celebrating the beauty of the land and the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and the natural world.

Key Dates in July:

July 9: Nunavut Day
Nunavut Day celebrates the creation of Nunavut, Canada's Inuit territory, and recognizes the Inuit's inherent right to self-governance. The day honours the history, culture, resilience, and enduring contributions of Inuit communities while celebrating one of the most significant milestones in Indigenous self-determination in Canada.

July 10: Anniversary of the 1827 Huron Tract Treaty
This day marks the anniversary of the 1827 Huron Tract Treaty, an agreement that had lasting impacts on the land rights, culture, and lives of the Anishinaabe peoples. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing relationship between Indigenous communities, treaties, and the land, while recognizing the importance of honouring treaty commitments.

July 26: Elder Recognition Day
Elder Recognition Day honours the wisdom, leadership, and cultural knowledge carried by Indigenous Elders. Elders play a vital role in preserving languages, traditions, and teachings while guiding future generations. This day celebrates their lifelong contributions to strengthening communities and ensuring that Indigenous knowledge continues to be shared.

July 31: UFCW National Bannock Day
Established by UFCW Canada, UFCW National Bannock Day celebrates bannock as an enduring symbol of Indigenous resilience, adaptation, and community. The day honours Indigenous culinary traditions while recognizing the importance of sharing food, culture, and stories that bring communities together.

The 13 Grandmother Moon Teachings shared here are drawn from Kinoomaadiewinan Anishinabek Bimaadinzinwin, Book Two by Arlene Berry. It is important to recognize that teachings vary across the many distinct Nations and territories of Turtle Island.
