Standing in Solidarity on World Refugee Day
Toronto – June 19, 2026 – June 20 marks World Refugee Day, a global day of recognition for the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, a landmark international agreement that affirms the right of people fleeing persecution to seek protection. As a signatory to the Convention and its 1967 Protocol, Canada has long played an important role in providing refuge and opportunities for those seeking a safer future.
Today, refugee rights face growing challenges amid rising anti-immigrant and anti-refugee sentiment in Canada and around the world. Too often, refugees are unfairly blamed for complex issues such as housing shortages, poverty, and pressure on public services. This rhetoric shifts attention away from the systemic factors that contribute to these challenges.
The reality is that refugees, immigrants, and migrants are essential to Canada’s economy and social fabric. Refugees make significant contributions across key sectors, including manufacturing and health care, where UFCW Canada members work every day.
The right to seek safety is a fundamental human right. This year's United Nations theme, "Until we are all safe, no one is safe," reflects both Canadian values and the values of our union movement.
This year, UFCW Canada is proud to partner with the Canadian Council for Refugees in support of the We're Better Together campaign, which aims to counter the rise of anti-immigrant and anti-refugee sentiment across the country.
