By the Numbers: Working when unwell

Toronto – May 26, 2026 – According to the latest mental-health index published by Telus Health, six in ten Canadians workers are reporting to work while mentally or physically unwell at least once a week.
Key numbers from the index include:
- 61% of Canadian workers report showing up while mentally or physically unwell at least once a week
- Three in 10 workers report a mental-health score of 50 or lower
- One in three workers are considering leaving or uncertain about staying at their current workplace
- 34 percent of all workers are at a high mental health risk
No one should have to choose between working while sick and paying the bills. The need for at least 10 paid sick days for all workers has never been clearer. Ensuring workers have access to paid sick leave is essential for maintaining both individual well-being and overall public health.
