BDM Scholarship recipient strives to excel

Winnipeg – May 14, 2026 – UFCW 832 member Jose Rafael Nieves is one the latest recipients of the UFCW Canada BDM Scholarship.

Nieves, who works at Maple Leaf Foods, is using the scholarship towards his studies for an Industrial Mechanic/Millwright Certificate at Manitoba Institute of Trades & Technology.

“Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to strive to be the-best within my future career path,” says Nieves. “This scholarship will help fund my studies and supply me with the proper tools and safety equipment to excel my skills and understanding. Thank you once again for this opportunity!”

The UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship offers a total of $18,000 in scholarships to UFCW Canada members and their families and is one of more than 25 union scholarships available to members and their relatives every year, totaling more than $300,000 in support. Application deadline for 2026 is September 30.
