Asian Heritage Month 2026

Toronto – May 6, 2026 – May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the many contributions of Asian Canadians and to reflect on the ongoing work required to build a more just and inclusive society for all workers.
Across the country, UFCW Canada members of Asian descent play a vital role in every sector of our economy, from food retail and processing to healthcare, hospitality, and logistics. Their leadership, skills, and cultural knowledge strengthen our workplaces, our communities, and our labour movement.
Asian Canadian communities are incredibly diverse, representing a wide range of cultures, languages, histories, and lived experiences. This diversity is a source of strength, but it also means that the challenges workers face are not one size fits all. Barriers such as racism, language discrimination, credential recognition, and precarious employment continue to impact many Asian workers, particularly newcomers.
These realities are not new. Canada’s history includes unjust policies that targeted Asian communities, from exclusionary immigration laws to the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. The legacy of these injustices continues to shape the experiences of workers today, reminding us that progress must be actively defended and advanced.
In recent years, workers have also raised growing concerns about anti Asian racism and harassment, both in workplaces and in communities. UFCW Canada remains committed to confronting all forms of hate and discrimination through education, advocacy, and collective action.
Unions play a critical role in this work. Through strong collective agreements, UFCW Canada members secure protections that promote fairness, dignity, and respect on the job, including anti discrimination language, health and safety measures, and pathways for advancement. Just as importantly, our union creates space for workers to organize, speak out, and lead.
Asian Heritage Month is also a time to celebrate culture, heritage, and community. Across UFCW Canada, locals and members mark the month through events, storytelling, and initiatives that highlight the achievements and voices of Asian Canadians. These efforts help foster understanding and solidarity, essential foundations for a stronger labour movement.
As we mark Asian Heritage Month 2026, UFCW Canada reaffirms its commitment to equity, inclusion, and worker power. By standing together and lifting each other up, we continue to build a future where every worker, regardless of background, is respected, protected, and empowered.
