UFCW 1006A's Glacier Effs-Samuel named one of Canada’s 2026 100 Accomplished Black Women

Vaughan, Ont. – February 6, 2026 – UFCW Canada is proud to congratulate UFCW Local 1006A's Glacier Effs-Samuel on being named one of the 2026 100 Accomplished Black Women in Canada (100ABCWomen), a national recognition that celebrates the social, educational, political, and professional contributions of Black Canadian women from all walks of life.
The 100ABCWomen publication was created to highlight and document the achievements of Black women across Canada, while inspiring future generations by making their leadership and impact visible. Selected through a nomination process, honourees are recognized for their commitment to supporting Black girls and women, demonstrating leadership through role modeling and volunteerism, and contributing to the advancement of their communities.
Glacier’s recognition reflects more than three decades of dedication to workers and to the labour movement. Her journey with UFCW 1006A began in 1994 when she started working as a cashier at a Loblaws store in Mississauga. Motivated by a strong desire to help others, Glacier became deeply involved in union activism, serving as a steward, joining the UFCW Women’s Network, and working as an instructor for the local union.
While employed as a bookkeeper at Oakville’s Loblaws Real Canadian Superstore, Glacier was repeatedly elected to union leadership roles. In 2013, she was elected to the Executive Board of UFCW 1006A as Recorder, a role she continues to hold today.
In addition to her elected position, Glacier works as a Union Representative for Local 1006A and is the Chair of the Local 1006A Women's Issues Network. She also holds the role of First Executive Vice President of the UFCW Minority Coalition.
This well-deserved honour recognizes Glacier Effs-Samuel’s lifelong commitment to equity, education, and leadership—and her continued impact in strengthening the voices of workers, women, and Black communities across Canada.
