Social service workers at Interval House join union – UFCW 175 & 633
Ottawa – October 3, 2024 – Workers at Interval House in Ottawa voted in favour of joining UFCW Locals 175 & 633.
Our newest members support women and children fleeing domestic violence situations and provide peer support, administration, program assistance, community engagement and crisis services to ensure they remain safe and get the support they need during a very difficult time.
“Our union knows that workers who provide these services to vulnerable families should not have to face hardship at work, they should be supported to ensure their job security and rights are maintained at all times and they too are protected from favourtism, unfair treatment by management and job uncertainty. We look forward to supporting these workers and ensuring they are protected, feel safe and supported when going to work,” said UFCW 175 President Kelly Tosato.
Unfortunately, there is a high demand for these types of services but the toll it can take on the workers can lead to serious implications such as burnout, compassion fatigue, environmental stigma and various safety concerns.
Despite these challenges, many people find working in a women’s shelter to be a vital and impactful role, making a significant difference in the lives of those they serve.
The new members are looking forward to negotiations and are striving for better wages, increased job security, benefits and consistent scheduling.
