New contract for members at the Broadbent Institute – UFCW 1006A
Ottawa – August 19, 2024 – UFCW 1006A members at the Broadbent Institute ratified a new union contract with significant gains.
“We are proud to represent our members at the Broadbent Institute, whose do exceptional work advancing progressive and social-democratic principles,” said President Wayne Hanley. “The hard work of the committee and support of the membership were vital in achieving significant gains and improvements for our members at the Broadbent Institute.”
Highlights include annual wage increases, increased vacation entitlements, improved overtime entitlements, editorial independence language and more.
“This contract secures significant raises for workers at the Broadbent Institute and PressProgress and ensures all classifications of workers receive a living wage, but it also improves our workplace culture with new agreements on issues of equity and diversity, work-life balance and professional standards,” said Luke LeBrun, who is the editor of the institute’s independent media outlet, PressProgress.
LeBrun said he was personally proud that negotiators succeeded in enshrining the editorial independence of PressProgress in the new union contract.
“This contract shows the Broadbent Institute is serious about producing professional, high-quality journalism, and it shows deep respect for our small team of journalists,” he said.
