Prairies Regional YIP inspires a new generation of union activists

Winnipeg – July 7, 2023 – A new generation of union activists convened for the Prairies Regional Young-Workers Internship Program (YIP) in Winnipeg, Manitoba from June 25-30.

The young members gained knowledge of the history, structure and legacy of their union, UFCW Canada while discussing and debating some of the most pressing issues of their time such as climate change, affordability, precarious work and organizing.

Members were treated to an afternoon at the iconic Canadian Museum for Human Rights where they learned of the labour movements storied history that included the Winnipeg General Strike.

They were also greeted by a visit from UFCW 832 President Jeff Traeger, UFCW 832 Secretary-Treasurer Marie Buchan and UFCW 832 Union Representative Geoff Bergen who spoke about the importance of young people getting involved in their union as the leaders of tomorrow.

Members departed the week-long session feeling energized to bring their learnings back to the workplace and their communities to continue inspiring another generation of union activists.
