Food processing members at Canada Royal Milk join the union – UFCW 175 & 633
Kingston, Ont. – January 23, 2023 – Workers at Canada Royal Milk are celebrating union certification after waiting more than two years for the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) to render a decision.
“This decision took a very long time because worker’s rights in Ontario continue to be delayed or set aside in the interest of business,” says UFCW 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “The system unfairly places the burden on working people to prove twice that they want to join a union. This province needs to bring back card-check certification.”
Workers overcame multiple hurdles when exercising their right to form a union and when the OLRB finally counted the segregated ballots in dispute over two and a half years their victory was secured. The new bargaining unit has since grown to include 150 workers who organized to secure job protections, address health and safety concerns and a toxic workplace environment.
