UFCW Canada participates in National Farmers Union (NFU) 2022 Convention

HRED committees convene virtually to plan initiatives in the year to come

Saskatoon, Sask. – December 19, 2022 – UFCW Canada recently participated in the National Farmers Union (NFU) 2022 Convention titled, “Confronting Concentration.” Against a backdrop of risings costs, ballooning corporate profits and growing numbers of farmers leaving the profession, participants gathered to organize, educate and build solidarity.

Participants were treated to a keynote address by Indigenous journalist Doug Cuthand, in addition to a host of panelists who discussed the growing concentration of corporate power in the food and agricultural sector.

UFCW Canada presented insights on building worker’s strength, resilience and solidarity in the food and agricultural industry with an emphasis on reforming Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP) to ensure fairness and dignity prevails in the system.

Panelists discussed what a worker representation model would like when applied to the TFWP and how it might end the vulnerability experienced by hundreds of thousands of migrants who work in Canada on a temporary basis.
