Health care workers at The Riverine achieve first contract – UFCW 175 & 633
Napanee, Ont. – December 1, 2020 – UFCW Locals 175 & 633 members working at The Riverine retirement home in Napanee, Ontario have achieved their first collective agreement as UFCW Canada members – bringing wage gains, language improvements, paid sick days, and more.
The new three-year term, which was negotiated virtually, features wage increases of 2% retroactive to April 1, 2020. Effective April 1, 2021, housekeeping, room attendant, prep cook, and dietary classifications will receive an additional 25 cents per hour on top of the 2% increase. These classifications will receive further increases in April 2022 on top of the percentage increase.
In the third year of the agreement, the employer will pay 65% of the health care premiums, up from 60%, which will help put some money back in the pockets of employees. A new uniform allowance will also help offset some costs for members.
Part-time employees may now participate in the health and welfare plan, as well as the pension plan. Additional contract language provides paid sick days, and two more paid statutory holidays enshrined in the agreement. Members benefit from an additional week of paid vacation entitlement after 20 years of service as well.
“The committee was great,” says UFCW 175 & 633 representative Dean McLaren. “We’re off to a good start with this contract; it includes substantial monetary improvements and I’m proud to say the members ratified it unanimously.”
