Maintenance workers at Zegas Group join the union – UFCW 401
Calgary – July 7, 2020 – Maintenance workers at Zegas Group Ltd. are among the newest members of UFCW Local 401 after saying “Yes!” to joining the union.
The new members work in 21 different apartment buildings throughout Calgary and Edmonton. They work as cleaners, renovation crew, groundskeepers, maintenance, and security service employees. The more than 30 new members now look forward to negotiating their very first union contract with help from UFCW negotiators.
“These members were really in need of the collective bargaining strength that comes along with joining UFCW Local 401,” says UFCW Canada national representative Jason Parrell. “A lot of employees are owed money from months ago and are finally being paid because of their pursuit of union membership.”
Throughout the campaign, workers stood together and voted for a better future. The members will now work toward achieving a collective agreement that addresses some of the issues in the workplace such as unfair treatment, lack of employee benefits, and concerns with poor working conditions.
