UFCW Women’s Network Convention inspires activists

Orlando, Florida – September 18, 2019 – UFCW women and allies from across Canada and the United States recently gathered in Orlando, Florida from September 12 to 15 for the 13th Biennial Convention of the UFCW Women’s Network.

Under the theme “Activism Makes Today’s Vision, Tomorrow’s Reality,” participants discussed a wide range of issues affecting working women and focused on how we can develop women leaders, help more women join the union, and engage working women in politics and the labour movement.

During the three-day event, attendees heard from Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA; student activist Rayne Fisher-Quann; Serena Rodrigues, Florida State Director for March for Our Lives; and sociologist and author Dr. Bertice Berry.

Activists also engaged in dynamic panels and workshops exploring everything from women in leadership to confronting sexual harassment to organizing to win. As well, participants had an opportunity to learn about the #UFCWWomenVote social media campaign for Canada’s 2019 Federal Election, which calls on women members, officers, and staff to vote for parties that are committed to addressing women’s issues in our workplaces and communities.

On day three of the convention, activists heard from UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema, who spoke about the programs and initiatives of the Women and Gender Equity Committee and the importance of achieving gender equity in all facets of society.

“UFCW women comprise more than half the membership and are the foundation of our union – a force of courage, wisdom, and resolve who make UFCW Canada a powerful voice for justice,” President Meinema told the audience. “And today, thanks to the efforts of UFCW women activists, we are making progress on the big issues affecting working women, from gender equity to paid leave for survivors of domestic violence,” the UFCW leader added.

The convention ended with attendees passing several resolutions aimed at advancing women’s rights and interests and inspiring more women members to get involved in their union. To learn more about the UFCW Women’s Network, click here.
