UFCW members gain first-ever contract at Washington State cannabis retailer
Seattle, Washington – August 31, 2018 – UFCW21 members at the Have a Heart cannabis retail chain in Washington State have ratified the first-ever collective bargaining agreement in the state between a union and an adult-use cannabis retailer.
"This relationship is quite unusual, in a very positive sense," said Todd Crosby, president of UFCW 21. "It's rare for an employer and their employees to reach a first contract so quickly and one that is so promising for current and future employees. These partnerships strengthen individuals, families and communities – and lead to superior service for customers."
Under the agreement, the 134 current employees of Have a Heart will receive above-average compensation for the industry, comprehensive health and welfare coverage, and other benefits. Have a Heart operates five stores in total in Seattle and across the state.
UFCW is the union for cannabis workers. In the United States, UFCW represent tens of thousands of cannabis workers across multiple states who work in growing and cultivating facilities, manufacturing and processing facilities, and also in laboratories, dispensaries and cannabis retail locations.
Cannabis workers in Canada can also gain the UFCW advantage in gaining industry-leading wages, benefits, and enhanced workplace rights. To find out how, check out the Union for Cannabis workers in Canada webpage on ufcw.ca.
