Toronto – March 2, 2016 – Member-activists and staff from UFCW Canada's National Office and Local 1000A recently attended the 2016 Chinese New Year Banquet at the Oriental Centre in Scarborough to ring in the Year of the Monkey with workers, labour unions, and community groups from across Toronto.

Organized by the Chinese Workers Network and the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, the banquet marked the end of Chinese New Year celebrations for 2016 and featured high-energy performances by local artists Eva Cheng, Alina Wu, Isabella Yang, Jie Zhang, and Bing Yao.

The banquet also sought to raise awareness of workers' rights, the Ontario government's ongoing review of labour laws and changing workplaces, and how we can support the next generation of workers in the age of austerity.

As well, members of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, the Toronto Centre NDP, and the Tamil Workers Network spoke about the vital importance of keeping hydro public in Ontario.

"If we want to maintain good jobs and keep hydro affordable in Ontario, we need to say no to privatization and tell the Wynne government that Hydro One is not for sale," said Ram Selvarajah of the Tamil Workers Network.
