Toronto – November 10, 2015 – UFCW Canada Local 1000A activists from across the Toronto-area recently laced up their bowling shoes and gathered for the annual UFCW Canada Local 1000A Bowl for a Cure tournament in support of finding a cure for sickle cell disease (SCD).

Now in its 5th year, the combined efforts of over 50 UFCW 1000A members and activists raised more than $4,000 for Faces of Our Children, an organization that raises awareness and funds in the fight against SCD.

"Thanks for another great year of this very fun, yet equally important event," says Local 1000A Organizing Co-ordinator Jonathan Lobo, who arranged the event. "Sickle anemia and other sickle cell diseases affect some of most vulnerable young people across the globe. Together, with the help of our sponsors, staff and participants we are able to help in the fight to find a cure for this disease."

Sickle cell is a blood disorder which leads to red blood cells getting stuck in the blood vessels. As a result, much-needed blood and oxygen get blocked from nourishing vital organs. The Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada estimates that every year in Canada, one in every 2,500 babies are born with sickle cell disease. In Canada, it is estimated that 4,000 people have SCD.
