Saskatoon, Sask. – September 24, 2015 – After two days of workshops and canvassing, UFCW Canada activists from across Saskatchewan are ready more than ever to defeat the Harper Conservatives and help elect a new government that is on the side of working families.

More than 70 UFCW Canada Local 1400 member activists gathered at the local union’s Regina and Saskatoon locations for two-day political action training sessions during the week of September 13.  The sessions included workshops on labour history, the threat of ultra-conservative governments to the rights of middle-class families, and the power of solidarity to elect candidates who understand the issues facing everyday families.

Activists also had a chance to meet and hear from NDP candidates running in their area, including Sherri Benson (Saskatoon West), and Erin Weir (Regina–Lewvan). Later in the workshops, UFCW Canada’s director of Political Action, Mark Hennessey, provided activists with a primer on participating in election campaigns as canvassers, campaign office volunteers, and even on Election Day.

Following the classroom sessions, the activists put their new skills into action as they fanned out across Regina and Saskatoon to canvass for NDP candidates.

As UFCW Canada Local 1400 President Norm Neault told the activists at the Saskatoon session, “together we have the power to build a better tomorrow. It is vital that we stand up and make our voices heard, and put an end to Harper’s attack on labour rights by electing a party that has proven time and time again that the people of Canada are the best investment we have.”
