UFCW Canada to fully participate in Ontario labour law review

UFCW Canada to fully participate in Ontario labour law reviewToronto – February 17, 2013 – UFCW Canada is pleased to hear the Ontario government will be reviewing workers’ rights and labour laws this spring. On Tuesday, the province announced the launch of public consultations on the changing nature of the modern workplace.

This is an opportunity that is long overdue. It was the Harris Conservative government that gutted labour laws in Ontario twenty years ago. At the time, and still today, workers and unions felt and continue to feel that many of their rights were stripped away.

“I am happy to work with Minister Flynn, under the leadership of Premier Wynne, to review and address the needs of workers and workplaces,” says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema, “particularly in the areas of part-time and precarious employment faced by much of the workforce today, such as in the retail, hospitality, healthcare, and many other sectors.”

UFCW Canada plans to fully participate in the consultations this spring.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW Canada) represents more than a quarter of a million Canadian members across the country. Together, we are building a stronger future for UFCW Canada members, their families, and our communities, while protecting and advancing employees rights and social justice for all.
