Get well soon, Jack

UFCW Canada members and family were shocked and saddened to hear that NDP Leader Jack Layton will be stepping down temporarily as leader to deal with a second battle with cancer.

Jack has always been a good friend of UFCW Canada. He has walked with us on the picket line, spoken out on our behalf and has always found the time to engage with our members. Jack has been a tireless worker on behalf of our union and all ordinary people.

In the recent federal election despite facing prostate cancer and a broken hip Jack campaigned relentlessly across the country connecting with millions of Canadians inspiring them with his message of hope and optimism for our collective future.

On election night his efforts paid off: 103 NDP MPs were elected, for the first time the NDP became the Official Opposition and for the first time a realistic look forward to a future government that will respect and work in the interest of all in our society.  Jack’s optimistic message and personal charisma was a big reason for the NDP’s success.

No doubt UFCW Canada members will join the growing number of Canadians in sending their love to Jack and Olivia and in wishing Jack a speedy recovery as we look forward to continuing our fight together for a more just and equitable Canada.
