UFCW Canada wins big at the 2011 CALM Awards

The groundbreaking communications efforts of UFCW Canada local unions and the National Office were recently recognized by the Canadian Association of Labour Media (CALM), which presented the union with 7 awards at the 2011 CALM Conference held May 5 to 7 in Burnaby, B.C.

For the second year in a row, UFCW Canada was awarded the Muckraking Award for the www.GEE20.ca project and its outstanding coverage of the G20 demonstrations in downtown Toronto last summer. The National Office also received the Breaking Barriers Award for the “Education Has No Borders” campaign, along with the Best Photograph Award for “Justice for Sudbury warehouse workers”, and Best Poster Honourable Mention for “We Remember December 24”.

UFCW Canada Local 1000A took home the prestigious Ed Finn Award for Excellence in Feature Story Writing for its coverage of the 2010 Loblaws negotiations, and Excellence in Writing Honourable Mention for the local union’s membership magazine, Connections.

UFCW Canada Local 1400 added to the union’s impressive haul with the Best Moving Billboard Award for the “Having a Rough Time at Work?” emery board.

The 2011 CALM Awards were also memorable for UFCW Canada because they marked the first time the freeperson Award was presented to recognize the year’s best cartoon. The freeperson Award was established to commemorate the life of longtime UFCW Canada national representative Mike Freeman for his outstanding contributions to CALM and labour communications.
