Les réunions mexicaines portent fruit Faisant suite à des réunions tenues à l’initiative des TUAC Canada, entre différents représentants du gouvernement mexicain et le président national des TUAC Canada, Wayne Hanley, ainsi que d’autres intervenants (sujet traité dans des numéros antérieurs de DIRECTIONS), nous avons connu une percée en quelque sorte en ce qui a trait à la reconnaissance des efforts des TUAC Canada pour défendre les intérêts des travailleurs.

À partir de cette année, tous les travailleurs agricoles mi-grants du Mexique qui participent au Programme canadien des travailleurs agricoles saisonniers (PCTAS) recevront une carte de référence ainsi qu’une brochure d’information décrivant les services dont ils peuvent se prévaloir dans les centres de soutien pour travailleurs agricoles migrants des TUAC Canada à l’échelle du pays. Les TUAC Canada diffuseront plus de 15 000 exemplaires de chaque publication en espagnol, que le gouvernement mexicain intégrera à des trousses d’information et d’orientation à l’intention de tous les travailleurs inscrits au programme.

« On pourrait croire qu’il s’agit là d’une étape modeste en comparaison de ce que nous souhai-tons accomplir à long terme pour les travailleurs migrants, mais il ne fait aucun doute que nous avons fait un pas dans la bonne direction », de dire le confrère Hanley. « Le fait d’avoir obtenu l’assentiment et la coopération du gouvernement mexicain constitue en soi une indication du progrès accompli dans notre travail visant à fournir à tous les travailleurs migrants le soutien et la représentation qu’ils méritent. »

Des documents en langue anglaise ont été préparés pour diffusion auprès des travailleurs jamaïcains, barbadiens et autres travailleurs antillais, à leur arrivée au Canada. Tout comme l’année dernière, les TUAC Canada exploiteront des centres de soutien pour travailleurs migrants à Abbotsford et Kelowna (Colombie-Bri-tannique); à Portage La Prairie (Manitoba); à Leamington, Simcoe, Virgil et Bradford (Ontario); à Saint-Rémi (Québec).
