UFCW Canada National Youth Internship Program (YIP)
UFCW Canada National Youth Internship Program (YIP)
The first session of the 2007 Youth Internship Program (YIP) was a success. It was held in Collingwood, Ontario from June 3 to 9. The participants came from across the country.
The participants went through workshops designed to highlight UFCW Canada’s past, present, and future. They learned about the history, structure, and role that UFCW Canada plays in their workplace, community, home, and country. They also addressed the challenges of globalization and Wal-Mart, and how they change our daily lives.
UFCW Canada has always worked to ensure that all our initiatives to engage young members are ‘by young members, for young members’. This year the YIP was facilitated by two young members Enver Harbans (local 175) and Brandi Tracksell (local 1400). Both where past YIP participants and continue to stay involved in their local unions.
Quote from the participants evaluations:
“I came in the program not entirely sure what to expect. But it certainly was educational. I would say the YIP exceeded any expectation I may have had.”
“The best part of the YIP is meeting a diverse group of young unionists. Together we help each other to become the next generation of labour leaders.”
“I enjoyed hearing about each member’s experience. Understanding how other locals operate improves my understanding of my local.”
UFCW Canada, with the assistance of its local unions, has conducted the YIP for the past eight years. This program has helped to train and educate the future leaders of UFCW Canada. If you are interested in participating in this program, speak to your Local President.
