Agreement ratified at Maple Leaf Edmonton
Workers on strike for seven weeks at the Maple Leaf Poultry plant in Edmonton have ratified a three-year collective agreement reached after the company called the union back to the table in late October.
Members of UFCW Canada Local 1118 voted 59% in favour of the contract on November 1.
“We would like to thank all of those who supported us through this strike,” says Albert Johnson, president of Local 1118.
“Throughout the strike the Canadian and the temporary foreign worker members sent a clear and united message to Maple Leaf that their concerns had to be taken seriously and ultimately that is what happened."
The three-year agreement includes a minimum wage increase of $1.75 an hour for all production workers over the term of the agreement, along with substantial improvements in benefits and contract language.
