Recently 30 UFCW Canada activists from across the country attended the Egale (Equality For Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) "Speak Easy: Stand Out, Speak Up" annual gala in Toronto along with 350 other supporters from diverse organizations and backgrounds.
Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2000, December 18th is annually commemorated as International Migrants Day to raise awareness that the human and labour rights of migrant workers must be respected and protected across all borders.
December 10th is celebrated annually as International Human Rights Day. It commemorates that day in 1948 when the United Nations unanimously adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The reckless actions of the Harper Tories in spying on Dr. Cindy Blackstock, child welfare advocate, the Executive Director of First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCS), and a UFCW Canada national community partner, is disturbingly reminiscent of Senator Joseph McCarthy who terrorized Americans with the Red Scare during the 1950s, and utilized that fear to create a chilling effect on those who advocated for basic decency and human rights.
UFCW Canada Local 832 has been chosen as the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Human Rights Commitment Award of Manitoba.
UFCW Canada had an unparalleled presence at the 11th Biennial Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) Convention in Toronto from November 21 to 25. With over 100 activists in attendance, UFCW Canada represented one of the largest delegations at the convention.
