As Canada’s largest and most progressive union in the retail marketplace, UFCW Canada has developed a forward-thinking accord that enshrines the rights of its members at future Loblaws Superstores.
Under the terms of the accord, if Loblaws chooses to develop Superstores, the stores will be unionized (unlike Wal-Mart or Costco) and these Superstores will offer their UFCW employees wages and benefits far superior to any other Big Box chain.
In stores currently open, food-handling employees and cashiers will continue to receive their current salary and benefits package according to their existing union contracts. No change. No rollbacks. No changes period to their current collective agreements.
As for any new Superstore non-food employees (handling household merchandise), their starting rate would be lower than food employees. But their benefits and union protection would be the same as their brothers and sisters. And as vacancies come open on the food side these new employees could apply and move to the higher wage scale.
This breakthrough affirms that Big Box employees also deserve a union workplace; a right UFCW Canada will continue to fight for at other Big Box chains including Wal-Mart.
