Workers at Lococo's grocery store join the union, UFCW 175

Workers at Lococo's grocery store join the union, UFCW 175Hamilton, Ont. – April 19, 2014 – Dozens of workers at Lococo’s grocery store in Hamilton, Ontario are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 175 after voting to join the union in early February. The 75 Lococo's members join over 65,000 workers in the retail, food processing, and health care sectors who are also members of Local 175, Canada's largest local union.

The Lococo’s employees decided to join the retail union in order to improve their wages, benefits, and working conditions. They also wanted to build the same kind of good jobs that UFCW Canada members enjoy at other food retail employers, such as Loblaws Supermarkets, Metro Grocers, and No Frills.

"We would like to congratulate and welcome the new members at Lococo’s, who demonstrated great courage throughout the organizing campaign,” says UFCW Canada Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. "As the leading voice for retail food workers across Canada, we are honoured to represent this group of workers, and we look forward to negotiating a fair and competitive first contract as soon as possible," Brother Haggerty adds.
