Ixtepec, Mexico – January 9, 2014 –Every day, the Brothers of the Road hostel opens its door to hundreds of migrants in transit through Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Migrant workers from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua arrive on The Beast as the local train is known — jumping off after a hard and gruelling 14-hour passage. At the shelter, they find a warm smile for everyone. Founded in 2007 by Father Alejandro Solalinde, the Brothers of the Road hostel offers a welcoming stopover where migrant workers can have a good meal and rest up and refresh themselves before they continue along their way.

Renewing its commitment toward migrant workers, regardless of their migratory status or nationality, and as a token of respect and appreciation for the work of the Father Solalinde, UFCW Canada recently made a donation of blankets to the hostel. With the onset of winter, the donation was welcomed by both the migrants and Brothers of the Road team. Father Solalinde also thanked UFCW Canada for its long-standing commitment to protect the rights of migrant workers, their families and communities.
