UFCW 401 supports safe patient care in Alberta

ufcw 401 safe patient care alberta una local 115Calgary – September 10, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 401 recently joined United Nurses of Alberta Local 115, the Calgary and District Labour Council, and other allies in supporting nurses’ calls for safe patient care in Alberta.

Registered nurses in Alberta are facing job cuts by Alberta Health Services (AHS) despite a $106 million surplus in the most recent AHS budget.

Local 401 representatives stood in solidarity with UNA Local 115 members to call on AHS and the Alberta government to reverse the cuts and demonstrate a commitment to providing Albertans with quality care in the province’s hospitals. Waving the Local’s flag as a visual sign of support, representatives worked with UNA members to engage the public on the importance and impacts of the cuts.

“These cuts stand to impact our members too,” said Local 401 President Douglas O’Halloran, “they’re part of a troubling direction in which our government is taking this province without any consultation or justification. Albertans need to stand up to this bullying and demand accountability from Premier Redford and her government.”
