UFCW 401 engages community at Globalfest

ufcw 401 globalfestCalgary – September 4, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 401 recently led the way at Globalfest, a community festival dedicated to celebrating and showcasing Calgary's cultural diversity and artistic excellence. This year, Local 401 participated in all five evenings of the annual Festival, bringing the Union’s unique perspective to the 2013 theme: Women’s, Gender, and Identity Issues.

A special highlight from GlobalFest 2013 was Local 401’s participation in a citizenship ceremony, during which UFCW activists took great pleasure in ushering new Canadians and their families to their seats.

Local 401 also set up an information tent, with community allies from PSAC and CUPE, to engage festivalgoers on labour-related issues. The unions operated a raffle, in which members of the public could be entered after answering a skill testing question from the Employment Standards Code.

Local 401 activists also educated the public on the Union’s Child Care campaign, receiving signatures on almost 700 campaign postcards at the event. PSAC handed out information about job cuts hurting women and the Conservative government’s assault on women’s rights. CUPE also handed out materials on a variety of different issues.
