Sister LaRoche, who works for Shoppers Drug Mart in Quesnel, BC  joins 17 other proud UFCW Canada members and family members in receiving $1,000 toward their post-secondary studies.

Offered through the UFCW Canada National Council, the Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu (BDM) Union Scholarship is named for three UFCW Canada leaders, and exists to assist UFCW Canada members and their families in coping with the ever-increasing cost of tuition and associated expenses for post-secondary education.

Sister LaRoche is currently enrolled at the University of British Columbia, where she is in her fourth year of the Nursing program.

“Going to post-secondary school at any age provides challenges but I’m finding that going to school in my 40s, with a part-time job, 4 sons and a husband at home offers a whole different set of challenges,” says Chantal. “Due to the heavy course load of the Registered Nursing degree I am unable to work as much as I’d like; therefore, the financial situation in my final year is a bit strained. This scholarship will help alleviate some of that stress.”

Upon graduating this spring, Sister LaRoche plans on pursuing her dream of serving northern and rural communities as an emergency room nurse.

“Imagine my surprise at receiving an email stating that I was a recipient for the 2012 BDM Union Scholarship! I would like to offer a sincere ‘thank you’ for choosing me to receive this much-needed award,” adds Sister LaRoche.

Every year UFCW Canada offers a total of 18 annual BDM scholarships of $1,000 each to members, their spouses, and dependants for post-secondary study.
