UFCW and Amnesty demand investigation into death of activist Carlos Hernández

UFCW Canada has joined Amnesty International and a growing number of civil society and social justice organizations around the globe in calling for an independent, thorough and impartial investigation into the killing of union activist Carlos Hernández.

Brother Hernández was shot dead on 8 March in eastern Guatemala. He may have been targeted for his activism, and two other human rights defenders working in the area are at particular risk.

Carlos Hernández was a leading member of several civil society organizations, including AGUND, which has a strong relationship with UFCW Canada as an international partner for migrant worker justice and rights.

I join the growing number of people around the world who are calling on you and the Guatemala government to immediately launch an independent, thorough and impartial investigation into the killing of Carlos Hernández, the brave union activist who was shot dead in eastern Guatemala on March 8. I am also asking you to make the findings of that investigation fully accessible to the public and to bring those responsible to justice. I also join Amnesty International and other leading civil society and peace organizations in urging you to take immediate steps to provide all necessary protection to the members of Coordinación Campesina Nuevo Día in accordance with their wishes. As a global citizen, I reiterate that the world is watching, and I remind you that human rights defenders – including trade union leaders – have the right to carry out their activities without any restrictions or fear of reprisals, as set out in the UN Declaration on the Rights and Responsibilities of Individuals, Groups and Institutions to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
