Waste management members at NexCycle Plastics reach new agreement – UFCW 1006A
Brampton, Ont. – April 26, 2021 – UFCW 1006A members at NexCycle Plastics in Brampton, Ontario have voted to ratify a new union contract with important gains after successfully pushing back against harmful concessions proposed by the company.
The contract runs until February 14, 2025 and covers forty-five workers.
“The union negotiating committee did an outstanding job in standing up for the membership at NexCycle, ensuring they achieved a fair contract,” said Wayne Hanley, President UFCW 1006A. “The union advantage ensures workers have a voice at work, and are able to take action, through the negotiations process, to improve their working conditions and livelihoods.”
Negotiations were difficult with the company proposing contract language to reduce the bargaining unit scope and make it easier to terminate workers. But ultimately, the workers prevailed.
“We are happy with what we got in the contract,” said Harry Balraj union steward. “It was a great experience being part of the committee, our union did a lot for us.”
Workers at NexCycle work in a variety of roles including shipping, warehousing and production/machine operator. Contract highlights include wage increases and improvements to employee medical benefits.
