Toronto – March 2, 2021 – March 8 marks International Women's Day (IWD), a time to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and girls everywhere. A time to recognize the women who inspire us, and a time to renew discussions about the importance of gender equality in Canada and around the world.

The day also marks a call to action on achieving gender parity in pay, a gap that continues grow throughout the pandemic.

COVID-19 has exposed the fundamental gaps in our society and has disproportionately impacted women and those who are marginalized, vulnerable or struggling. On every front, the COVID-19 pandemic has eroded hard-fought gains to gender equality. From layoffs to lack of childcare, to increased unpaid work, to the rise of domestic violence: women have been disproportionately impacted by the health and economic crisis presented by the pandemic.

This year, UFCW Canada supports the IWD theme “Choose to Challenge.” We can all choose to challenge by calling out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.
