Health care workers at Villa Retirement Lodge join the union – UFCW 175

Midland, Ont. – January 2, 2019 – Health care workers at Villa Retirement Lodge in Midland, Ontario are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 175 after recently voting to join the union.

The retirement home workers won their certification vote after only a week and a half of organizing to join the UFCW family. The new bargaining unit is comprised of eight full- and part-time Resident Attendants at the retirement home, located about 40 minutes north of Barrie.

Employees at the home joined the union to gain better job security and to negotiate specific language around vacations. Other reasons for joining included better wages and benefits and addressing issues around short-staffing.

The new members at Villa Retirement Lodge join many other UFCW 175 members who work in the health care sector, including employees at Bayfield House in nearby Penetanguishene, which is owned by the same parent company.

“UFCW 175 is a natural fit for the Villa Retirement Lodge workers,” says Russell Evans, an organizer with the Local Union. “Our union reps have experience with this employer, and we represent thousands of other health care members across the province,” he adds.
