Toronto – November 23, 2018 – Each year, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated on November 25. The date was chosen by the United Nations to honour the lives of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic, who were violently assassinated nearly 60 years ago.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread and devasting human rights violations in our world today and commonly goes unreported due to the perceived stigma and shame surrounding it. According to the World Health Organization, one in three women and girls have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

The psychological and physical consequences of violence against women and girls affect women in nearly all stages of their lives and can present barriers to education and limited opportunities in the labour market.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is also the beginning of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence that will conclude on December 10 – International Human Rights Day.

UFCW Canada will once again participate in the YWCA and Rose Campaign’s #NotOkay social media initiative in support of the fight to end violence against women. This year, on Sunday, November 25 at 12:00 p.m. (E.S.T.), join UFCW Canada on Twitter and show your support for the #NotOkay campaign by tweeting your stance on ending violence against women using the hashtag #NotOkay. Activists are also encouraged to post of photo of themselves holding a #NotOkay poster, which can be downloaded here.

Take a stand on violence against women by speaking out whenever you come across any tweets, posts, videos, or images that objectify, belittle, or attack women in society. See it. Share it. Stop it!
