UFCW celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

Winnipeg – June 12, 2018 – UFCW Canada activists recently honoured National Indigenous Peoples Day at an event held at the UFCW Local 832 Training Centre in Winnipeg.
Supported by the UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee, the 2nd Annual National Indigenous Peoples Day event was an opportunity to engage with UFCW members and allies from across the country working toward Reconciliation and to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, taking place on June 21.
Throughout the event, activists participated in traditional Indigenous ceremonies, including a pipe ceremony led by Elder and UFCW 832 member Eric Flett. Participants also engaged in workshops and discussions focusing on cultural differences and the challenges facing Indigenous communities today.
“It is a tremendous honour to stand next to my Indigenous sisters and brothers at this very special event celebrating the culture and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada,” UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema told event participants. “We are all part of the solution towards Reconciliation, and we must keep up our commitment to engage, listen, and learn from Indigenous UFCW members, their families, and their communities,” he adds.
The event was developed in partnership with the UFCW Canada Human Rights, Equity, and Diversity (HRED) department in consultation with the UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee and members from Indigenous communities throughout Canada.
