UFCW 8th Regular Convention – Day 3

Las Vegas, Nevada – April 25, 2018 – On Wednesday, UFCW activists and delegates from across Canada and the USA gathered for the third day of the UFCW 8th Regular Convention – to chart the future of the union and to reaffirm the commitment to grow the UFCW family over the next five years.

“Ours is a diverse and inclusive union,” said UFCW International Secretary-Treasurer Esther López in her address to the convention. “Let us embrace the very bedrock principles that are the very foundation of our union – dignity and respect on the job – to fuel our pursuit toward a more progressive and inclusive country – for all our members, for all workers who struggle to make it.”

Sister López was then joined by American tennis champion and social justice advocate Billie Jean King, who shared her strategies and the history of her decades-long campaign for gender equity and equal pay for equal work. “We must be allies in this together. We must all be on the same team when it comes to equality,” said sister King.

Throughout the day, delegates also passed a number of resolutions to strengthen the union’s resources and inclusiveness.

On Day 3, delegates also heard from United Steelworkers International Vice President Fred Redmond, UFCW Executive Vice President and Director of Organizing Shaun Barclay, and Executive Vice President and President of the RWDSU/UFCW Stuart Appelbaum.
