UFCW Canada supports Equal Pay Day – April 10, 2018
#EqualPayDay

Toronto – April 5, 2018 – On April 10, UFCW Canada activists from across the country will join in observing Equal Pay Day – a day that represents how far into the next year a woman must work to earn the same amount made by a man in the previous year.

Nationally, women in Canada make 74 cents for every dollar earned by a man per year. According to Statistics Canada, the gap is even wider for women belonging to minority groups. For example, Indigenous women face a 57% gender pay gap; women with disabilities face a 46% gap; immigrant women face a 39% gap; and racialized women face a 32% gap.

UFCW Canada sees closing the gender wage gap as a national priority and continues to push all levels of government to address this urgent issue. Accordingly, we stand in solidarity with organizations like the Ontario Equal Pay Coalition to advocate for a future where women workers are paid what they are owed.

You can help close the gender wage gap by supporting UFCW Canada’s Closing the Gap campaign today. You can also print our Equal Pay Day 2018 poster and post it in your workplace, or post pictures on social media showing your support for closing the gender wage gap using the hashtag #EqualPayDay. Be sure to tag UFCW Canada (@UFCWCanada) when posting your pics!

UFCW Canada’s participation in Equal Pay Day actions across Canada is a part of our union’s ongoing effort to close the gender wage gap and achieve equity for women workers in Canada.
