Toronto – December 20, 2012 – UFCW Canada Local 1993 recently celebrated 28years of bringing activists and community members together for an annual dinner and dance that has raised a lifetime total of more than $60,000 for leukemia and sickle cell research.

In addition to raising funds for two very worthy causes, the fun-filled holiday event also recognizes the outstanding contributions of UFCW Canada members and youth leaders. This year, Local 1993 congratulated Lennox Valladares on his well earned retirement from the HBC Eastern Big Ticket warehouse in Scarborough, Ontario, and thanked him for 30 plus years of volunteer service to the labour movement.

The annual event also took great pride in recognizing Marc Anthony Rodrigues for his outstanding service to the community as a youth leader and role model.

“The Year-End Dinner & Dance is a Local 1993 tradition that has always been about celebrating the achievements of our union, strengthening relationships with the community, and fundraising for two very important causes,” says Local 1993 President Winston Gordon. “Thanks to the full support of the National Office and our fellow UFCW Canada Local Unions, along with our major employer HBC, we are making a difference in the fight for a cure.”

Local 1993 is also a key sponsor of the Camp Jumoke Organization, which serves the needs of hundreds of children across Canada afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease.
