Workers at ACE Bakery join the union – UFCW 175

Workers at ACE Bakery join the union – UFCW 175Toronto – August 23, 2017 – Close to three hundred workers at ACE Bakery in Toronto are now members of UFCW Canada Local 175 after recently voting “YES!” to joining the union.

The 260 ACE Bakery workers make baguettes, specialty loaves, burger buns, sandwich rolls, bagels, and cookies for supermarkets across Canada, including all Loblaw banner stores. They joined the union after reaching out to UFCW in order to obtain fair wages and respect and dignity at work.

“The ACE Bakery workers were extremely organized, passionate, and engaged in their effort to join the union, and that is why this campaign succeeded,” says Shawn Haggerty, the President of UFCW Canada Local 175. “I would like to congratulate and welcome the new members at ACE Bakery, who overcame numerous obstacles and showed incredible courage and determination throughout the organizing drive,” Haggerty adds.

Prior to the certification vote, the employer attempted to add over 100 workers from outside the bargaining unit to the employee list in an effort to quash the unionization drive. However, the union challenged this move with the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the bakery workers succeeded in their push to join UFCW Canada Local 175.  The union plans to begin bargaining with the employer very soon.

The ACE workers join many other UFCW Local 175 members who work in the bakery industry, including members at Maplehurst Bakeries, La Rocca Creative Cakes, and Ready Bake Foods, among others.
